Watercolour Quilting
ABOVE and ABOVE RIGHT: 1996/5756 The WATERCOLOUR QUILTED prayer shawl, was Marilyn's first watercolour quilting project..1996. It belongs to a woman in Sioux Falls South Dakota.
The ALEPH, on the LEFT, was assigned to WOMEN'S LEAGUE for CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM, Canadian Seaway Branch as their contribution to the 2000/5761 Biennial Convention, held in Washington DC in December 2000. The watercolour quilted background was prepared by MARILYN LEVY. There are graduated shades from light on the top to dark on the bottom representing the darkness without knowledge and moving UP to the light and brightness of knowledge.
The work is 12" wide by 16" high and is mounted on corefoam and padded.
The ALEPH was created in silk netting with gold and black cording around the edge. Note that the ALEPH is the same, up or down and the two alephs are identical but reversed. HARRIET LIEBMAN, of Toronto, Ontario did the beautiful couching, overlay and beading.
All designs shown are the property of the artist and may NOT be reproduced without permission

BELOW: a quilted square, created by Marilyn, using a watercolour quilting technique in combination with hand applique and embroidery, approximately 13" x 13" preparedas a contibution for a very special Jerusalem quilt being prepared for a synagogue in Jerusalem. This square, with its approx 613 french knots and beads (representing pomegranate seeds) represents the mitzvot. This will be joined with many other squares created by women from around the world to create a quilt celebrating women in Jewish history.
RIGHT: Autumn, 2004/5765: CHALLAH COVER commissioned for a 47th Wedding Anniversary Celebration combining skills of watercolour quilting, embroidery, textile design, hand applique and beading. tTradition tells us that a pomegranate has 613 seeds. There are 613 commandments that an adult Jew is supposed to fulfill every day. Marilyn has used a combination of French knots and beads to represent the 613 seeds in the appliqueed pomegranate.
ABOVE: WATERCOLOUR-QUILTED Wedding Pillow. This is truly a LOVE PILLOW as the Hebrew "Onee Ledodi, Ledodi Lee" is hand-embroidered in yellow across the lower third of the design. A Pomegranate is appliqueed on the middle right side. This pomegranate has approximately 613 seeds (French Knots and hand beading) and gold couching leading from the top of the Pomegranate. Each couching stitch is beaded with a seed pearl. At the ends of the gold curves are crowns (hand-embroidered in gold, with red beads and seed pearls). The back of this pillow is gold dupioni silk and the piping is also gold dupioni silk. What a special gift for a special Bride and Groom! (or for a Special Anniversary gift).
